The Cherpumple: "Culinary Lesbian Love Child of Sara Lee and Betty Crocker"

We'd run across Charles Phoenix before at functions like the 2010 Kansas Preservation Conference and an event at Kansas City's Airline History Museum.

Charles' main presentation is usually his retro slide show, but at the 2010 Denver Modernism Show he made his Cherpumple - a unique three layer cake. The bottom layer is a spice cake with an apple pie baked inside. The middle layer is yellow cake with a pumpkin pie baked inside. The top layer is a white cake with a cherry pie baked inside. Then he applies a lot of frosting.

Here's a video of the final product emerging from the oven; it wasn't the prettiest cherpumple ever seen but I can tell you it was mighty tasty:

He describes the cherpumple it as the dessert version of the turducken, which is a chicken cooked inside inside a duck inside a turkey. That actually sounds pretty carnivorously cool, but I could do without the duck, which I guess would make it a turken. Not that I could make a turken or a cherpumple - I'm lucky if I can "slit cellophane over entrée" and nuke without incident.
